The Importance of Aftercare

Tattoo and piercing aftercare is crucial for ensuring proper healing and maintaining the quality of the body art. Proper aftercare helps prevent infections, which can lead to complications and potentially damage the tattoo or piercing. By following recommended aftercare practices, such as keeping the area clean, moisturized, and protected from irritants, individuals can promote faster healing and reduce the risk of scarring or color fading. Additionally, diligent aftercare supports the longevity and vibrancy of tattoos and the health of piercings, ensuring that they remain a source of personal expression and satisfaction for years to come.

Tattoo Aftercare

Standard Tattoo Aftercare
  1. Leave the Bandage On: Keep the initial bandage on for at least 2-4 hours after getting the tattoo to protect it from bacteria and dirt.

  2. Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your tattoo.

  3. Gently Wash the Tattoo: After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your fingers to clean the area, avoiding any scrubbing.

  4. Pat Dry: Use a clean, soft towel or paper towel to gently pat the tattoo dry. Do not rub the area.

  5. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment: Use a recommended tattoo ointment or a fragrance-free moisturizer to apply a thin layer over the tattoo. Avoid petroleum-based products unless advised by your tattoo artist.

  6. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent irritation and allow the tattoo to breathe.

  7. Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight, as UV rays can damage the healing skin and fade the ink.

  8. Do Not Scratch or Pick: As the tattoo heals, it may itch or peel. Avoid scratching or picking at the scabs to prevent scarring and ink loss.

  9. Avoid Submerging in Water: Refrain from swimming, soaking in baths, or using hot tubs until the tattoo is fully healed, usually around 2-4 weeks.

  10. Continue Moisturizing: Keep the tattoo moisturized with a suitable lotion to prevent dryness and promote healing.

  11. Follow Up with Your Artist: If you notice any signs of infection or have concerns, contact your tattoo artist for advice.

Tattoo Aftercare With Second Skin

  1. Leave the Second Skin On: Keep the second skin bandage on for the recommended time, usually 24-48 hours, as advised by your tattoo artist.

  2. Remove the Second Skin Carefully: When it's time to remove the bandage, do so gently. Peel it off slowly under warm running water to minimize discomfort.

  3. Wash Your Hands: Before touching the tattoo, wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.

  4. Gently Wash the Tattoo: After removing the second skin, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your fingers to clean the area gently.

  5. Pat Dry: Use a clean, soft towel or paper towel to gently pat the tattoo dry. Avoid rubbing the area.

  6. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment: Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of a recommended tattoo ointment or fragrance-free moisturizer.

  7. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent irritation and allow the tattoo to breathe.

  8. Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect the tattoo from direct sunlight to prevent damage and fading.

  9. Do Not Scratch or Pick: Resist the urge to scratch or pick at the tattoo as it heals to avoid scarring and ink loss.

  10. Avoid Submerging in Water: Do not swim, take baths, or use hot tubs until the tattoo is fully healed.

  11. Continue Moisturizing: Keep the tattoo moisturized with a suitable lotion to maintain skin hydration and promote healing.

  12. Monitor for Reactions: If you experience any unusual reactions, such as redness or swelling, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.

Both aftercare methods are designed to ensure your tattoo heals properly and maintains its appearance. Always follow the specific advice of your tattoo artist, as they may have additional recommendations based on your individual tattoo and skin type.

Basic Piercing Aftercare

  1. Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your piercing to prevent introducing bacteria.

  2. Clean the Piercing: Use a saline solution or a piercing aftercare spray to clean the area. You can make a saline solution by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in 8 ounces of warm distilled water.

  3. Soak or Compress: For some piercings, soaking the area in a saline solution or applying a saline-soaked compress for a few minutes can help reduce swelling and promote healing.

  4. Avoid Alcohol and Peroxide: Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh antiseptics on the piercing, as these can irritate the skin and delay healing.

  5. Gently Remove Crusts: If crusts form around the jewelry, gently remove them with a clean cotton swab or pad soaked in saline solution.

  6. Avoid Touching or Twisting: Refrain from touching, twisting, or playing with the jewelry, as this can introduce bacteria and irritate the piercing.

  7. Keep the Area Dry: After cleaning, gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or tissue. Avoid using cloth towels, which can harbor bacteria.

  8. Avoid Submerging in Water: Refrain from swimming in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or oceans until the piercing is fully healed to prevent infection.

  9. Be Mindful of Hair and Clothing: Keep hair, clothing, and other objects away from the piercing to avoid irritation and snagging.

  10. Avoid Makeup and Lotions: Do not apply makeup, lotions, or creams near the piercing site, as these can cause irritation and infection.

  11. Sleep Carefully: Try to avoid sleeping on the piercing to prevent pressure and irritation. Use a clean pillowcase and consider using a travel pillow to protect ear piercings.

  12. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get enough rest to support your body's healing process.

  13. Avoid Changing Jewelry Prematurely: Do not change the jewelry until the piercing is fully healed, as advised by your piercer.

  14. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Watch for signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, pain, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your piercer or a healthcare professional.

  15. Follow Up with Your Piercer: If you have any concerns or questions about your piercing, reach out to your piercer for guidance and advice.

By following these aftercare steps, you can help ensure that your piercing heals properly and remains healthy. Always adhere to the specific instructions provided by your piercer, as they may have additional recommendations based on the type and location of your piercing.
